I've been doing these activities for more than six years now, and I have been teaching teenagers and adults at all language proficiency levels. I studied English translation for my BA and English teaching for my MA. Learning a foreign language takes a lot of time, and it is a laborious process that will become easy for the learner if s/he is motivated enough and has perseverance. The other factors in being successful in language learning are the way you learn that language and the materials you are taught. Regarding the way of teaching, based on the most recent second language acquisition theories, language is best learned through the CLT (communicative language teaching) method of teaching. Language is learned in the context of interaction.
